Harnessing the power of scent
Our sense of smell provides one of the most primitive and powerful means by which we can access certain emotions, feelings and memories. From a very young age, we have been using our olfactory abilities to build maps of our surroundings, to protect ourselves from hazards, to socially connect with others and to develop our overall sense of wellbeing.
Scent has the ability to shift our emotional state in milliseconds and to considerably influence our overall mood, attention and memory abilities as well as our actions and behaviours. We all tend to develop our own ‘scent story’ of those essences we are drawn to or averse to whether consciously or unconsciously, and that story continues to be refined as move through life and across different contexts. Some recent studies have suggested that our preference for perfumes as adults may have already been decided on or ‘imprinted’ in us as children due to our various experiences, associations and interactions. For many, for example, the smell of roses can bring us right back to our grandmother’s garden, or the smell of freshly washed sheets tends to create an instant sense of ease.
Scent is a therefore an entirely subjective and personal experience through which we all uniquely engage.

Using the highest quality of essential oil ingredients
I started exploring and experimenting with different essential oils, carrier oils and other natural essences and ingredients more deliberately over eight years ago as I had the fortune to spend extended periods of time in countries such as Bali, Indonesia and India amongst others. The eastern philosophy to culture, ceremony and celebrations in these countries felt so alive and entrenched with a rich and vast range of scents. From burning palo santo, sage and incense in various group rituals, to arranging beautiful plant and floral offerings outside homes, to walking through bustling market stalls and cooking up the most flavoursome spiced curry dishes thereafter, my draw to fully explore the world of scent became clear.
This interest took on a new level as I decided to try and find natural ways to replace many of the various cosmetic, perfume and home products I was using on a daily basis. From there, I became to understand not only the emotional, psychological and spiritual qualities of various natural essences, but also to start to understand their range of cognitive, physical and other therapeutic benefits that they can offer when used and applied appropriately. From here, I started to play with making my own personal products such as facial serum and hair oil as well as candles and soap. I had the opportunity to shadow and learn from various aromatherapists, herbalists and perfumers both locally in Ireland and overseas.
From here, I decided to focus on crafting my selection of essential oil perfumes. These are essential oil ‘eau de parfum’ roller bottles comprising about 5-8 different essential oils diluted in an organic carrier oil. Given my appreciation for the process that underpins the extraction of precious essential oils, I make every effort to select organically and ethically sourced ingredients insofar as possible, and to blend and create my products with mindfulness and intention.
